The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors has passed a resolution authorizing the design of a new, modern Animal Shelter and Animal Control Facility. At the center of this decision lie such objectives as improved comfort and stress reduction for the housed animals.
A few critical points are still under discussion, such as the implementation of specific areas for adoption, quarantine, isolation, and strict isolation. An area for potential adopters to interact with the various animals at the shelter is also being pondered. Here are a few specifications on the new shelter:
- Air conditioning and an air exchange system to improve the health and comfort of the animals, the shelter employees and visitors.
- A small room for rabbits, guinea pigs, ferrets, reptiles, etc.
- An examination room and a spay/neuter area for veterinarians to work in. This will allow for all animals to be spayed and neutered before adoption.
- A large education room for weekly staff meetings, dog obedience classes, rabies clinics and temperament and behavioral analysis.
- Animal bathing areas that include tubs and dryers. This area will also have washers and dryers for cleaning of towels and blankets.
- A central dish washing machine for cleaning the animal dishes, litter boxes and toys will also be included.
- A very open reception area with separate entrances for adoption, animal surrender, and animal control.
- Outside exercise area for potential adopters to interact with pets and to socialize the dogs with other dogs.
The Friends of the Saratoga County Animal Shelter (FSCAS) and The Saratoga County Animal Shelter wish to thank The Saratoga County Board of Supervisors for filling this critical need in the community and call upon all members of the community to contact their local representatives in an attempt to both salute their decision and find out more about the new shelter, which will be groundbreaking in the spring.
FSCAS and The Saratoga County Animal Shelter look forward to hearing the decisions on all outstanding items and are confident and hopeful that the county’s elected representatives will provide the county with a new facility worthy and representative of this wonderfully caring community.
